Differing Damage When Shooting at Chiefs, Arbiter or Elites Gun, Help.

I found out that with the Masterchief, the Arbiter and Elites shieldless that when plasma projectiles hit the weapon they do more damage. I believe it is only notable with projectiles that have a damage modifier on these character's armor (hard_metal_thin) as I believe hitting the holding weapons does base damage.
For example the Plasma Rifle has a base damage of 10 and a modifier on 'hard_metal_thin' making the damage 3.5. If the projectiles only hit the character with no shields and health of 30, it will take 9 shots to kill but if it hits the weapon, it will take as little as 3 shots.
Additionally the weapons also use 'hard_metal_thin' armor.

I have tested this in Halo CE and Halo 3 and this does not occur. I haven't been able for find a way to change or fix the issue.
A workaround is to change the base damage and increase the damage modifiers proportionally but I would prefer a proper fix.
Any help or insight is appreciated.
